GILDAN GREEN CHILE STEW WINNER CROWNED

The winner of the Gildan Green Chile Challenge was crowned Saturday afternoon at Hank's House. Michelle Zebrowski took home $2,500 for Sandia High School as well as having her stew named the official green chile stew of the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Zebrowski's award-winning recipe will be mass produced by famous chef, Jane Butel, for those at this year’s Fan Fest at University Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 17 from 9 a.m. until Noon.

“I’m stunned, I can’t believe it," said Zebrowski. "It really is an honor. I competed against some incredible cooks today. I’m just really happy this is all benefitting my alma mater.”

Picking up second place and $1,500 for Manzano HS was Sheila Ramirez. Ramirez was the only contestant to deviate from the traditional green chile stew, submitting a green chile chicken enchilada stew.

Rick Schmille finished third, picking up an additional $1,000 for Manzano HS. Community members who sampled the stews were able to vote for a “people’s choice” winner, who received a gift card for $50 and Gildan® products. That award went to Carri Phillis (El Dorado). All participants chosen to prepare their recipes were given an apron, t-shirt and prize bag from Gildan.

“This is a tremendous event," said Jeff Siembieda, Gildan New Mexico Bowl Executive Director. "For Gildan to come into this community and be so proactive in embracing our culture and our schools shows their commitment to the people of New Mexico. I can’t wait to do it again next year.”

Siembieda, teamed up with Butel, Chris Hanks of Hank’s House, and Annittra Atler – Mrs. New Mexico United States 2010, formed the official judges panel.
